Barr. Ahmed Abaya has stressed the need for a mutual relationship between landlord and tenant for a peaceful coexistence
He asserted Sobi 101.9 FM on Tuesday when speaking on landlord and tenant relationship (Tenancy) during a programme tagged “Ilani Loye”, which was sponsored by a Non-Governmental Organization under the management of Barr. Aiyelabegan Lanre AbdulKadir, Initiative on Education for Global Growth.
Speaking on the rights of the tenant, Barr. Ahmed stated that the tenant has exclusive possession, in as much as he does necessities (paying rents regularly).
“Tenants has an exclusive possession in which he has all right within the period he rented the apartment as long as he does necessities”.
Speaking further, he maintained the tenant that pays regularly has the right to a habitable place
When asked about the right of the landlord, Barr. noted that the law emphatically stated do’s and don’t of the landlord, adding that there is a penalty for he who trespasses
The landlord has the right to inspect his house but must give adequate notice to the tenant and must not go at ungodly hours, he added.
Also, Barr. Idayat Ibiyinka who was also featured in the radio program listed two major laws that guide landlord and tenant relationships in Kwara State.
“There are two major laws that guide landlord-tenant relationship in Kwara State which include; Landlord and tenant law of 1989, and Rent control and recovery of residential premises law of 1995”.
However, they urged both landlord and tenant to be upright and ensure justice and fairness in their dealings
