The 12th Convocation Lecture of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, held on December 12, 2024, radiated intellectual grandeur and philanthropic grace, thanks to the Chairman of the Salman Shagaya Foundation, Alhaji Sherif Shagaya. As a celebrated business magnate in the oil and gas sector and a philanthropist of enduring impact, Alhaji Shagaya’s presence — through his delegation — elevated the ceremony to a beacon of hope and inspiration.
Represented by Alhaji Abdulfatai Salman Bakinni, a former legislator of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Shagaya underscored his commitment to education and societal growth. The highlight of the day was Shagaya’s generous donation of ₦10 million to the institution, further cementing his dedication to educational advancement and community development. The gesture was lauded by the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Arinde, who emphasized the enduring relationship between the Shagaya family and the administration of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, CON. She described the donation as a reflection of the family’s deep-rooted commitment to advancing Kwara State’s educational landscape.

The convocation lecture, a cornerstone of the weeklong celebrations, was delivered by Emeritus Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, OON, FAS, President-elect of the Nigerian Academy of Science. With the theme *“The Optimum Utilisation of Nigeria’s Energy Resources for Sustainable Growth and Development,”* the lecture delved into the nation’s energy challenges and opportunities, offering insights that are vital to Nigeria’s quest for sustainable development.
The event drew a delegation of esteemed personalities representing Alhaji Shagaya, including Alhaji Muftau Akanbi Oke, Director General of the Salman Shagaya Foundation; Dr. Bakki; Barrister Mahmud Abdulraheem; Alhaji Abdullateef Bakini; Alhaji Abdulrauf Abdulraheem, and Alhaji Abdulrazaq Arogunmasa.
