The deplorable state of the Ajassepo/Igbaja/Okeode Road, spanning from Oyi Bridge to Yaru-Olayinka Highway, has worsened insecurity and economic challenges for towns along the route.
Residents, commuters, and other road users gathered at the road on Tuesday morning to appeal to the government of AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman to provide urgent assistance and repair the road to alleviate the suffering of the people.
This spot has become notorious after 15 market women returning from Okeode market were abducted last Wednesday.
Elder Oyin Olaitan Zubair, speaking with Just Event Online TV, commended the State Government for approving the reconstruction of part of the road from Ajassepo/Okeyapo, a 12km project, but emphasized the need for palliative attention to the 3km portion at Oyi Bridge, including scrapping and surface dressing, for economic and security reasons.
Alhaji Isiaka Zubair, a public transporter, lamented that the road, previously trouble-free, has become a death trap since heavy trucks started using it, and urged the government to address the situation as a matter of urgency.
Mallam Ali Ahmed, Deputy Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the route, stated that they have been contributing to the repair of the road, but currently lack the funds to continue due to the road’s worsening condition.
Mallam Issa Seye, Chairman of NURTW, pleaded with the government to intervene, as the deplorable road has hindered their work and poses a threat to their lives, with criminals taking advantage of the road to perpetrate evil.
