The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated a special committee on the prevention of boat mishaps in Nigeria in a bid to enhance safety on the nation’s inland waterways.
In a statement on Thursday, the National Inland Waterways Authority explained that the event, which was held in Abuja, marked a crucial step in addressing the recurring challenges of boat accidents across the country.
Speaking during the event, Oyetola emphasised the urgent need to stem the tide of tragic boat mishaps.
Oyetola added that the committee has been given six weeks to complete its assignment and submit recommendations
The minister stated that the menace has resulted in significant loss of lives and properties.
Oyetola described the country’s waterways as vital to commerce, transportation, and livelihoods, stressing that their safety and efficiency are paramount to the development of Nigeria’s blue economy.
