Op-Ed : LGA AUTONOMY: IT IS NOT UHURU FOR KWARA By Titilope ANIFOWOSHE

In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has finally granted financial autonomy to local
governments, a longstanding demand of Nigerians. This decision coincides with the
completion of primary elections by political parties in Kwara State, selecting candidates for
the upcoming September 2024 Local Government elections. The Supreme Court’s judgment
is a significant milestone, particularly noteworthy given the five-year hiatus in local
government elections in Kwara, which had raised concerns about the state’s commitment to
democratic principles and the rule of law
When the Kwara State Electoral body announced the election date, I felt a profound sense of
relief. The absence of local government elections for such an extended period has not only
stifled grassroots democracy but also undermined the effective governance and development
of local communities. This upcoming election represents a critical opportunity to restore
democratic governance at the local level and reinvigorate the participation of Kwarans in their
civic duties.
A particularly delightful trend in the build-up to the party nominations was the active
participation of other parties like the Action Alliance (AA), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP),
Social Democratic Party (SDP), and People’s Democratic Party (PDP). It was heartening to see
young, accomplished, and educated Kwarans stepping up to clinch the candidacy of their
respective parties. This diversity of candidates enriches the democratic process, offering a
broader spectrum of choices for the electorate and fostering a competitive political
environment that can lead to better governance.
Now that we have judicial backing for LGA autonomy and an election to plan, should we give
kudos to organizations like EnetsUD and then go to bed as Kwarans? Absolutely not! Now is
the time for Kwarans to show their strength and test their popularity. We must move beyond
the beer parlour talks, WhatsApp group fights, Facebook analyses, and Twitter criticisms. It is
time to showcase our genuine love for Kwara by actively participating in the election process,
ensuring that our people take the elections seriously, and voting for the most capable
candidates.
While items like security and major infrastructure projects are under the exclusive and
concurrent legislative lists, local governments have significant responsibilities that directly
impact the daily lives of citizens. Local governments handle economic prosperity, road
maintenance and construction, health, agriculture, licensing, drainage systems, and more.
Effective management of these areas can significantly improve the quality of life for Kwarans.
For Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s work to be effective, our local government officials
must be vibrant, our state assembly proactive, and our legislators in Abuja empathetic and
effective in their legislative functions.
The chairmanship and councillorship positions should never be seen solely as rewards for
party loyalty. These roles must be filled by individuals who embody the progressive ideologies
of their parties, understand the unique needs of their localities, and possess the capacity to address and solve local problems

It is crucial for Kwarans to take this election seriously and vote for the right candidates. The
efforts of the governor and the state government can only be as effective as the support and
functionality of local government officials. Young Kwarans, in particular, must rise beyond
writing lengthy, error-filled political epistles and engage in meaningful political activities.
Beyond the branded shirts and partisan semantics, this local government election presents
an opportunity to actively participate, educate our communities, and practice politics with
value.
We must understand that our involvement in this process goes beyond the superficial. It’s
about ensuring that our communities thrive under the leadership of individuals who are not
just capable, but also passionate about serving their people. The narratives we create and the
actions we take today will shape the future of Kwara for generations to come.
The APC must be commended for its gender-sensitive candidacy list for the local government
elections. It is inspiring to see Kwara continue to lead in female empowerment. Personally, I
pledge my support for the candidacy of Alhaji Azeez Yakub of Irepodun Local Government,
not just virtually but physically as well.
Our local governments must become the engines of development they are meant to be. This
requires electing leaders who understand the importance of infrastructure, education,
health, and social services at the grassroots level. Leaders who will not see their positions as
mere stepping stones to higher political offices but as platforms to make real, tangible
differences in the lives of ordinary Kwarans.
This September 21 local government election is a pivotal moment for Kwara State. It is a
chance to restore democratic governance at the grassroots level, ensure effective local
administration, and engage citizens in the political process. The prosperity of our state hinges
on the vibrancy and effectiveness of our local governments. Let’s seize this opportunity with
both hands, get involved, and ensure that the right people are elected to lead our local
councils.
May the best candidates emerge victorious, leading to a more prosperous and unified Kwara
State. Let’s not just hope for a better Kwara; let’s work for it. See you in Kwara soonest!
