Op-Ed : Leading by Example: Governor AbdulRazaq and the Quest for a Living Minimum Wage in Kwara State – By Abdulrafiu Ayuba

As the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has a unique opportunity to set a positive precedent for the country. One crucial area where he can demonstrate leadership is by implementing a living minimum wage for workers in Kwara State.

The federal government and labour stakeholders are currently negotiating a new minimum wage, with proposals ranging from N54,000 to N615,000. While a consensus has not been reached, it is essential for Governor AbdulRazaq to follow suit and implement a living minimum wage in Kwara State.

The current minimum wage of N30,000 is no longer sufficient to meet the basic needs of workers, and a new wage that reflects the current economic reality is long overdue. By implementing a living minimum wage, Governor AbdulRazaq can improve the standard of living for thousands of workers in Kwara State, set an example for other states to follow, strengthen the economy through increased consumer spending, and demonstrate his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers.

He must use his position as the NGF Chairman to encourage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to approve a minimum wage that correlates with the current economic situation of this country. By doing so, Governor AbdulRazaq can play a crucial role in ensuring that the federal government prioritizes the welfare of workers and sets a positive precedent for states to follow.

Furthermore, implementing a living minimum wage in Kwara State will have a positive impact on the state’s economy. It will increase consumer spending, boost economic activity, and reduce poverty. This, in turn, will lead to improved health and education outcomes, reduced crime rates, and a more prosperous state.

In addition, a living minimum wage will help to reduce income inequality, as the current minimum wage has failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

In conclusion, I urge Governor AbdulRazaq to follow the lead of the Federal Government and labour stakeholders by implementing a living minimum wage in Kwara State, once a consensus is reached. This bold move will not only benefit workers but also set a positive precedent for the country. As the NGF chairman, he has a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of Nigerians.
