Africa’s top-ranked U-14 player, Oluwaseun Ogunsakin made history by becoming the first home based Nigerian tennis player to compete at Wimbledon.
Wimbledon which began in 1877 at the All-England Club in Wimbledon, London is the world’s oldest tennis tournament and is widely regarded as the most prestigious.
The 2023 edition will be held in London from July 3 to July 16.
Ogunsakin earned a wild card to compete in the Junior Grand Slam at Wimbledon, and he will begin his European Tour career before the tournament begins.
He was named after winning the African U-14 title at the International Tennis Federation Confederation of African Tennis (ITF/CAT) junior championships in Lome.
The 14-year-old is expected to depart his training camp in Tunisia soon to compete in a few European competitions.
According to International Tennis Federation, Ogunsakin has a 70%-win rate having won 16 games and losing 7. He is ranked 1040 in the latest ranking released on March 20, 2023. His career-high ranking was 917 in the January 2023 rankings.
