National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has approached the Chinese government with a view to empowering members with skills. The move was part of NYSC’s bid to boost the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme introduced in 2012.
This was disclosed in remarks by NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, when he visited the Chinese embassy in Abuja, yesterday.
Ahmed said partnership between the corps and China in ICT, textile and agriculture will go a long way in giving NYSC participants more opportunities to become self-reliant and employers of labour, thereby increasing Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.
The NYSC boss, who was received by Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Mr. Li Xuda, sought opportunity for some corps members to visit China to witness the country’s cultural exhibition.
He also commended staff of the embassy for attending cultural carnivals and other major events organised at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kubwa, Abuja.
Responding, Xuda noted that China and Nigeria have longstanding relationship which needs to be sustained. He said the embassy will facilitate collaboration between his country and NYSC to ensure corps members have opportunity to acquire more skills, and explore the possibility of some members going to China for training in reputable industries.
