NARD demands end to casualisation of doctors

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has frowned upon the festering practice of employing medical doctors as casual workers instead of giving them permanent employment.

The association said it was particularly worrisome that the practice was gaining ground amid massive manpower shortages in government hospitals across the country.

NARD made this known in a communique issued on Monday after its Ordinary General Meeting held in Kaduna between May 27 and June 1, 2024.

The meeting had as its theme: “Journey towards universal health coverage: Nigeria’s status amidst financial crisis and epidemiologic transition.”

The communiqué was signed by the NARD President, Dr Dele Abdullah; Secretary-General, Dr Christopher Anaduaka; and the Public and Social Secretary, Dr John Egbe.

The resident doctors said the manpower gap had resulted in a high workload on their members in the country, as they asked the Federal Government to meet the demands of organised labour.
