The Kwara State Government has officially launched the State Guidelines for Baby-Friendly Initiatives and Policy on Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition.
The launching, which took place at the premises of the State Ministry of Health, was attended by the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the First Lady, represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam.
Dr. El-Imam who spoke on behalf of Governor AbdulRahman emphasized the importance of optimal nutrition for the normal growth and development of humans, particularly children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.
He highlighted the critical period of a child’s first 1,000 days of life, from conception to their second birthday, and the need for interventions to prevent wasting or stunting.
The Governor also announced the inauguration of the State Committee on Food and Nutrition and the domestication of the National Policy on Food and Nutrition and the Multisectoral Plan of Action on Nutrition.
Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, representing the First Lady, explained the Baby Friendly Initiative, which aims to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding in health facilities, communities, and workplaces.
She also outlined the key components of the MIYCN policy, including nutrition education and counseling, micronutrient supplementation, food security and fortification, growth monitoring and promotion, and strengthening health systems.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Hajia Afusat Adenike Ibrahim, commended the Governor and the First Lady for their commitment to improving the health and nutritional status of mothers and children in Kwara State. Shep assured that the Ministry would work tirelessly to implement the guidelines and policy, ensuring that every mother and child receives the necessary care and support.
Partners, including the World Bank and UNICEF, also sent goodwill messages, commending the Kwara State Government for its efforts in improving maternal and child nutrition. They pledged their continued support for the state’s initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving better health outcomes.
The launch marked a significant milestone in Kwara State’s efforts to prioritize the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly mothers and children. With the implementation of these guidelines and policy, the state aims to reduce malnutrition, improve cognitive development, and promote a healthier future for generations to come.
