The Lafiagi Emirate Youth Transparency Association (LEYTA) has issued a stern ultimatum to Senator Suleiman Sadiq Umar, representing Kwara North Senatorial District, demanding that he publicly retract his claim that insecurity in the region is “under control” by October 15, 2025, or face a formal recall process.
In a statement made available to journalists and obtained by Just Event Online TV on Friday, LEYTA expressed “deep disappointment and outright dismay” over the Senator’s remarks on the floor of the National Assembly, where he stated that “the government of Kwara State, in collaboration with the Federal Government… has brought that side under control.”
Reality Contradicts Senate Claim
The association described the Senator’s statement as “misleading and a gross downplaying of the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis” affecting Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas.
LEYTA backed its position with a detailed list of violent incidents that reportedly occurred between October 7 and 10, including:
- October 7: One person killed and another kidnapped in Bishewa, Edu LGA; similar attacks in Rani, Patigi LGA left one dead and one abducted.
- October 8–9: Renewed assaults on Gbadagun, Effan, and neighboring communities, displacing several residents.
- October 10: Effagi community attacked, with a husband and wife abducted and responding vigilantes severely injured.
LEYTA maintained that these incidents prove insecurity in Kwara North is “far from being under control” and “spreading by the day.”
‘Communities Left to Fend for Themselves’
The group decried the government’s inadequate security response, lamenting that local vigilantes and hunters are routinely outgunned by heavily armed bandits. It also described the number of deployed security personnel as “grossly inadequate” for the vast and vulnerable terrain of the region.
Ultimatum and Recall Threat
LEYTA accused Senator Umar of “trading the painful realities of his constituents for political convenience”, warning that such actions would no longer be tolerated.
“Failure to retract the statement by the given date will leave the Association with no choice but to initiate a formal recall process in line with constitutional provisions,” the statement read.
The group vowed to “mobilize all legitimate democratic means to ensure true representation” if the Senator fails to issue a public apology or clarify his comments.
The ultimatum reflects growing public anger in Kwara North, where residents continue to suffer repeated attacks from kidnappers and armed bandits despite government assurances of safety.
