The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) program in Kwara State has organized a Step-Down Training on Small Ruminant Production and Crop Residue Processing for students of Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin. The training took place today, January 29, 2025, at Gaa Imam Area, Ilorin.
Speaking with Just Event Online TV, the State Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye, explained that some teachers had earlier been trained on how to utilize crop residues—materials that were previously wasted or burned, leading to environmental pollution—to produce feed for goats, sheep, and cattle.
He further stated that it was the teachers who initiated the idea of passing on this knowledge to their students through practical sessions. “We only supported them by helping to organize the training, so the students can learn how what people consider waste can actually be repurposed as animal feed,” he said.
Mr. Oyawoye emphasized the importance of schools establishing farms to train students on waste-to-feed conversion. According to him, this approach will not only reduce atmospheric pollution but also cut down the movement in search of fodder and enhance livestock productivity.
The training featured two resource persons from Bursar Investment Company Limited, Hajia Imam Ayo and Mr. Amuda Busari, who delivered presentations and demonstrated how to use specialized machines for processing crop residues into animal feed.
In her remarks, the team lead and Agricultural Science teacher at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Mrs. Ogunwale Kafilat, expressed appreciation to L-PRES for the training. She assured that the knowledge gained would be effectively utilized to enhance agricultural learning and productivity among students.
