The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) In conjunction with the Kwara State Environmental Task Force on Thursday begun a clampdown on shops that violated environmental laws.
Just Event Online reports, Over 30 shops were sealed at Unity, Challenge and Taiwo in Ilorin, Kwara state capital for non-compliance with environmental sanitation laws which include indiscriminate dumping of wastes on the road median, accommodating filthy drainage at the frontage of their shops and non-compliance with the authorised waste collector
KWEPA secretary, Hajia Idayat Shade Folorunsho during the exercise said they sealed off some shops in Ilorin the state capital because the shop owners overstepping the environmental laws
Speaking further, she said It is disheartening that despite efforts of this administration to provide an enabling and sustainable environment to residents, people still go ahead violating the environmental laws of the state whereas a filthy environment poses threats to individual lives in the state. When sickness comes, it knows no boundaries.
It is important to ensure that shop owners will be taking responsibility for their waste, she added
The chairman of Environment Special task forces, Hon. Rasaq Jiddah enlisted the benefits of enforcing environmental laws; Improved public health, Reduced pollution, Increased property values, Increased tourism, Creation of jobs
He reiterated that the need to seal up the facilities became necessary to put an end to the environmental nuisance in the state.
Hon Razaq enjoined all shop owners in Kwara State to comply with the environmental laws. Says It is the right thing to do, and it will help to create a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.
A road user, Mr Soliu Bayo who speak with JustEventOnline Correspondent said The KWEPA and Environment special task force’s efforts are to be commended, and he hopes that they will continue to crack down on shops that are not complying with environmental laws.
