Kwara Govt Begins Evacuation of Shanties On Asa River To Prevent Flooding

The Kwara State Government on Friday begun the clearing and evacuation of shanties of the Asa River to prevent the looming flooding in the city of Ilorin and its environs.

The exercise which was led by the Commissioner for Environment, Mrs. Oluwatobi Remilekun Banigbe, and Chairman Environmental Task Force, Alhaji Razaq Jiddah were in partnership with the state fire service, and the professional local divers.

Speaking with the commissioner at Unity axis, she said upon the realization that shanties are blocking the free flow of water, so Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq swung into action by ordering the Ministry and Environmental Task Force to ensure clearing and evacuation is done with utmost urgency.

“We are here doing the job, we don’t need to go through memo writing because that will take a lot of time and the Governor does not want any room for the delay, as the lives and properties of Kwarans are of paramount important to him.

“The youths, professional local divers are the people engaged for the evacuation, so in a way, this is serving for a quick job opportunity for people who are professionals and willing.

“Exactly a week ago, delegates came from the Federal Ministry of Environment and Ecological Fund Office to inspect the river seeking permànent solution, so dredging has actually been awarded, and now there will be channelization where structures will be erected at the two sides of the river to stop overflow,” Banigbe said.
