Olarinoye Adijat, 2019 Africa Games three gold medals medallist, on Thursday won Nigeria’s second gold medal at the ongoing 2021 International Weightlifting Federation World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Adenike, who created a new African record in weightlifting in the clean and jerk category by lifting 116 kg in 2019, also broke a 20-year Nigerian history in the competition by winning a silver and 2 bronze medals at the IWF Championship.
Her gold, one silver and two bronze (silver and bronze are won in IWF Championship) all came from the 55kg women category.
With the gold, Adenike has become the second Nigerian to clinch a gold medal at the Commonwealth championship after Stella Kingsley set the pace on Wednesday winning a gold medal in the 49kg women category.
So far, Nigeria have five medals – two gold, one silver and two bronze – in the competition.
