Ile Arugbo: Kwara Rescue Team Condemns Government’s Contempt for Court Order
_…Call on Kwarans, Nigerians, international community to join in condemning such action_
The Kwara Rescue Team (KRS), a group of young professionals has expressed dismay at the Kwara State Government’s disregard for a court order regarding the disputed Ile-Arugbo land, belonging to the late Sage, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki.
Convener General, Comrade Adio Odunjo Olando and Secretary General ,Comrade Bello Olanrewaju in a press conference on Wednesday, the KRS condemned the state government’s actions, which undermine the judicial process and invite anarchy. They also expressed concern about the role of Kwara Police Command in providing security for the construction workers.
The KRS fears that the upcoming local government elections may be marred by violence and impunity, given the state government’s disregard for court orders and the rule of law.
The KRS called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to ensure the integrity of the police, the presidency to address the high level of impunity, and the judiciary to enforce its orders.
The group equally implored the state government to cease construction activities and respect the court’s directive.
In January 2020, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq ordered the demolition of the property without a court order, leading to a lawsuit and an interim restraining order from Justice A.O. Akinpelu. Despite this, the state government continues construction work on the land.
The group called on well-meaning Kwarans, Nigerians, and the international community to join in condemning these actions of the administration of gov AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
They also urged the judiciary to enforce its orders and uphold the sanctity of the court.
The Kwara Rescue Team remains committed to promoting political integrity, economic development, social advancement, and unity in Kwara State.
“We are deeply concerned that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is using officers of the Kwara State Police Command to execute this contemptuous behavior against the existing court order. Armed police officers are providing security for the construction workers on the disputed land. The police, as an institution of government, should not join an adventure aimed at undermining the judiciary and plunging Kwara State into a political crisis”.
“Given the manner in which Governor Abdulrahman disobeys court orders, takes the law into his hands, and encourages impunity among his followers—coupled with the massive violence during the recent APC primaries—we fear that the upcoming local government elections may be marred by similar violence and impunity. Many Kwarans who may want to vote against the Governor’s handpicked candidates could be perceived as enemies and forcibly silenced”.
