The Kwara State House of Assembly has taken a firm stance against the rising cases of ritual killings in the state, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and enforcement of the Kwara State Prohibition of Dealing in Human Parts Law.
During plenary on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Hon. Rukayat Shittu (Owode/Onire) moved a motion titled “Need to Address the Phenomenon of Money Ritual-Motivated Killings and Create Awareness on the Kwara State Prohibition of Dealings in Human Parts Law and Implementation of the Legal Framework”. The motion was seconded by Hon. Abolarin Ganiu Gabriel (Ekiti).
Hon. Shittu raised concerns about the increasing cases of ritual killings, where innocent individuals, especially women, are murdered for financial and supernatural purposes. She stressed that despite existing laws, a lack of public awareness and enforcement gaps have allowed these crimes to persist.
The House debated extensively, with several lawmakers, including Hon. Arinola Fatimah Lawal (Ilorin East), lending their voices in support of urgent action.
Urge the Governor to direct the Ministry of Communication and the Office of the SA on Security to collaborate with law enforcement, community, and religious leaders for a comprehensive public education campaign on the Kwara State Prohibition of Dealing in Human Parts Law.
Mandate the SA on Security to work with security agencies to establish a citizen reporting platform for suspected ritual-related activities.
Advise Kwarans, especially youths, to be cautious about social media friendships and report suspicious conversations to security agencies.
