Group urges Kwara Govt to adopt Youths, Peace and Security action plan

…charges Ministry of Youths to setup steering committee

A leading Pro Democracy group in Kwara State, Kwara Must Change has urged the Kwara State Government, to adopt the recently launched national action plan for youth, peace and security, a domestication of a global resolution of the United Nations.

The group said that, adopting the resolution will go a long way in utilizing the potential of youths in conflict resolution and the process of peacebuilding across various communities in Kwara State.

In a statement by Convener of Kwara Must Change, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the group explained that, conflict is impossible without youths and so is conflict resolution and if peacebuilding efforts will produce desired result, youths must not only be involved in the whole process, they must also be given the opportunity to be key drivers of the process.

According to Hamzat, while kwara is currently a lead sub-national in terms of youth involvement in governance, it must also become a model of sub-national proactiveness, aswell as lead the process of visionary leadership by becoming the first state to adopt the United Nations resolution on Youths, Peace and Security.

Recall that in September 2021, Nigeria becomes the second country after Sweden to adopt the United Nations Resolution on Youths, Peace and Security.

The resolution, which was passed by the United Nations in December 2015 recognizes that young people play an important and positive role in maintenance, and promotion of international peace and security.

The important resolution identifies five key pillars for action, namely participation, protection, prevention, partnership and reintegration.

United Nations encourages member states to give youths a greater voice in decision making at local, national, regional and international level.

Kwara Must Change therefore called on the Ministry of Youths to setup a steering committee to see to the adoption and implementation of the policy in kwara state.
