- Govt deploys 10 weather stations to aid farmers
FEDERAL Government has installed Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) to assist in data generation for early information to farmers in 10 states, it was learnt.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr Ernest Umakhihe spoke yesterday in Abuja at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the ministry and Nigeria Meteorological (NIMET) agency on downscaling seasonal climate prediction to farming communities.
He noted that timely weather information would boost productivity and reduce losses from adverse conditions.
Umakhihe said their collaboration would increase the number of AWS to be deployed to enhance accuracy of the Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP).
He noted that NIMET’s SRP had shaped our agriculture with regard to amount of rainfall, duration, when to grow, length of growing season, to increase adaptive capacity of farmers to weather changes.
