The Federal Government has allocated a total of 395,624 hectares of land for irrigation purposes.
Out of this, 154,000 hectares have already been developed for irrigation, according to the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev.
Speaking during a ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Utsev disclosed that 1,658,576 farmers had been actively engaged in the ongoing irrigation projects nationwide.
“In line with our commitment to enhance food production and job creation, irrigation has become central to our development strategy,” he said.
The minister outlined the achievements of the ministry under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, declaring the completion of 628 water supply projects, currently serving over 451,670 Nigerians.
He added that in the area of sanitation, the “Clean Nigeria, Use a Toilet” campaign had expanded from 102 to 142 local government areas.
“We are also upgrading several dams to support this effort.”
