The Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD) has commended the Supreme Court for its landmark judgement affirming that the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act applies to sub-national governments, including Kwara State.
Speaking at a press conference held at ENetSuD’s office in Ilorin on Tuesday, the Coordinator, Prof. Abdullateef Alagbonsi, described the ruling as a major victory for transparency, accountability, and democratic governance.
Just Event Online TV reports, Prof. Alagbonsi emphasized the need for increased collaboration between civil society organizations and the media to ensure full implementation of the FOI Act in the state.
This press conference is not just to celebrate the judgement but to create an avenue to sit with our media colleagues and build strong partnerships,” he said.
He called on the media to give publicity to the various projects being tracked by ENetSuD using the FOI Act. “We don’t want the media to leave us alone, and we will not leave the media alone in this joint struggle for an open Kwara,” he declared.
According to him, the push for transparency should not be limited to the activities of the current administration alone, but must also cover past governments. “We want everyone to have access to an open Kwara. We don’t want governance to be controlled by upper hands, but to be people-driven,” he added.
ENetSuD reaffirmed its commitment to using the FOI Act as a vital tool in the fight against corruption and misuse of public funds.
The group also urged the media to support its next phase of action—pragmatic use of the FOI Act to access public information and scrutinize government spending across both past and present administrations in Kwara State.
