Court Rules in Favour of Alada Babatunde, Overturns Expulsion from Unilorin

In a landmark judgment, the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin has set aside the expulsion of Alada Babatunde (Alibaba), a final year student of the department of Veterinary surgery at the University of Ilorin, and ordered the university to immediately reinstate his studentship.

Justice E.N. Anyadike on Thursday, June 27 2024 also issued an order that Unilorin should award damages of N3 million in his favor. FHC/IL/CS/2/2019

Alada Alibaba, president of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS) at the university in 2016/2017 academic session, was expelled over allegations of misconduct and examination malpractices Zoonoses VPH 508, However, he denied the wrongdoing and challenged the university to court over his expulsion.

The court’s ruling is a major victory for Alada Alibaba, who was also the pioneer president of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS) at the university 2016/2017 academic session.

His expulsion had generated widespread controversy and outrage among students and human rights groups.

With this ruling, his studentship has been restored, and he is expected to resume his studies immediately. The university has been ordered to pay him 3 million naira in damages for the wrongful expulsion.

This development is a significant win for student rights and a testament to the power of determination and fight for justice.
