Baba Idris: Give us opportunity to take charge of our destiny, Kwara Youths appeal to PDP

A group of young people across the sixteen (16) local government areas in Kwara State, The Coalition of Kwara Youths and Young Professionals has appealed to the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the state to consider one of them who is aspiring for the governorship position, Mr. Baba Idris as its gubernatorial candidate ahead of the 2023 elections.

Speaking in Ilorin, the coordinator of the group, Abdulrahman Muhammed said, since the return of democracy in 1999, the energy, resources, and creative ability of young people have been explored by politicians negatively.

He noted that young people are critical stakeholders in Kwara and Nigeria’s polity, stating the government’s decisions and actions are mostly affected by youths.

“To change this narrative, there have been ceaseless calls for inclusion of young people in the scheme of our national affairs, to tap from the creativity, innovation, vibrancy, energy, and curiosity that characterizes youthfulness to rescue our various localities, states, and Nigeria at large from the pervasive socio-economic and political incongruity it has been plunged into.

“Many thanks to the Not Too Young To Run Bill, passed by the 8th Senate under Sen. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and graciously signed into Law by President Muhammadu Buhari, which gave impetus to the call for the largest chunk of the nation’s population to take over from the older generation, who have demonstrated the best they could. We believe it is high time young people are considered for a chance to also demonstrate the best in us.”

Abdulrahman further said that young people nowadays have got the qualifications, exposure, ideas, and orientations, even far more than some members of the older generation leading the country today.

“The emphasis on experience is a myth, understanding that those experienced today gathered the experiences because they were given the opportunity in the first place,” he said.

“It is consequent upon these convictions that our prevailing national travails; socioeconomic, physical, and political in Kwara state and Nigeria requires the innovation, curiosity, energy, and creativity of young people to be surmounted, that we are calling on the Kwara State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to consider one of the best of us, Mr. Baba Idris, who has summoned the courage by showing interest in the gubernatorial ticket of the Party. “

Giving a breakdown of Baba Idris’s personal and political trajectory, the group affirmed that Idris is energetic, innovative, humble, and a bridge-builder, whose calm appearance, enterprise, and intellectual soundness are admired and accepted across political and social divides of Kwara State.

“As an Electrical Engineering graduate, he is a problem solver and strategist that has recorded remarkable success in his personal and public life. He is a good communicator, with strong connections among the young and old, men and women and as such, will find it easy to understand and relate with the yearnings and aspirations of all classes of Kwarans, particularly the average Kwarans. This is because Baba Idris is also an average Kwaran himself, who struggled to stardom.”

The youths urged the State leadership of the PDP and the National leader of the party, Dr. Bukola Saraki to exemplarily demonstrate the workability of the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ law in the governance of Kwara State by considering Baba Idria to fly the gubernatorial ticket of the party in the State for the 2023 general elections.

The party leadership and members were however assured that Baba Idris’s candidacy will attract the support of people across socio-political divides for the party.
