Athletics: Peru lose right for 2024 World U20 Championships

Peru has lost the hosting right of yet another major sporting event barely two days after world soccer ruling body, FIFA, withdrew the country’s right to host the World U-17 World Cup championship in November as World Athletics yesterday yanked off Lima’s right for its U20 Championship.

The Peruvian capital was scheduled as the host city of the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships.

But in a release yesterday, the world athletics body, said it was left with no choice than to withdraw the hosting right of the South American country ‘due to circumstances beyond its control.’

According to World Athletics, the Peruvian Athletics Federation, informed that recent political instability and social unrest, as well as natural disasters in Peru, have left the federation and the local organising committee unable to stage the event next year.

The World U20 Championships were to be held in the South American city from 26-31 August 2024.

World Athletics further said that discussion with a replacement host for next year’s event and will provide more information in due course.
