Your Excellency,
I write with deep concern as a stakeholder in the future of Government Secondary School, Ilorin (GSS Ilorin), a school with a proud heritage and history of academic excellence, to appeal to your good office to urgently intervene and halt the ongoing construction of a filling station on the school premises.
The decision to locate a fuel station within the land of a prominent academic institution is not only unsafe but runs counter to the spirit and letter of your administration’s urban renewal policy, which aims to control the unchecked proliferation of filling stations across Ilorin metropolis. It is disturbing that despite this policy, construction continues on a school property that ought to be preserved and improved for educational development.
GSS Ilorin has, over the decades, produced outstanding leaders and professionals who have contributed immensely to the growth of our society. Sadly, the school has suffered gross neglect over the last forty years, and what is now unfolding on its land—first with Craneburg Construction Company turning part of the school into a site office, and now with a filling station springing up—poses further threat to its survival and sanctity.
Locating a fuel station within a learning environment is both awkward and unsafe. It endangers the lives of students and staff, disrupts learning activities, and erodes the historical and educational significance of the school. This action is disheartening and demoralizing to the old students, many of whom are deeply pained by the continued decline of their alma mater.
We recall how your administration took a bold and commendable step to stop the construction of a pavilion within the Emir’s palace in line with public interest and urban planning considerations. We ask that you apply the same wisdom and leadership to this issue.
We respectfully urge Your Excellency to halt this construction immediately and take steps to restore the full integrity of GSS Ilorin as an academic institution, not a site for commercial development.
Thank you for your attention and anticipated prompt action.
Yours faithfully,
Olarinoye Tunde,
Ex-officio member,GSS Ilorin Old Boys Association
