The Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari CFR, officially turbaned Alhaji Yakubu Layi Gobir as the 10th Sarkin Gobir of Ilorin on Friday.
Speaking with newsmen, Mutawali Ngeri, Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq, described the newly turbaned Sarkin Gobir as an accomplished business man, a cultural leader, and a devout follower of Allah (SWT).
He emphasized that Alhaji Yakubu Gobir’s character, hard work, and pedigree made him deserving of the title. “Now, with both a traditional and honorary title, I congratulate him on this milestone,” he added.
In her remarks, Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibo Kawu, expressed confidence in the new Sarkin Gobir’s success. She stated, “He is a great member of the family and understands the significance of the title. Without a doubt, he will uphold the family’s legacy, just as our fathers did.”
Alhaji Yakubu Gobir, in his acceptance speech, thanked Allah for His blessings and appreciated the Emir of Ilorin for his fatherly role. He also commended the Gobir family, both at home and in the diaspora, for their unwavering support.
He further extended his gratitude to friends and associates who traveled from far and wide to attend the turbaning ceremony, praying to Allah to reward them abundantly.
The historic event, attended by dignitaries and community leaders, marks a significant milestone in the history of the Gobir dynasty in Ilorin.
