Nigeria’s agricultural sector was the worst affected by the floods that ravaged many states last year, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed.
The sector, according to the bureau, lost close to N577.8 billion.
Statistician-General of the Federation, Semiu Adeniran, said the sum is contained in a report on flood assessment conducted by the NBS. The report is yet to be released officially.
Adeniran, at the National Emergency Coordination forum meeting in Abuja yesterday, explained that the survey was carried out by the bureau in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The survey focused on Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Jigawa, Kogi and Nasarawa.
Adeniran said the floods also affected economic activities and disrupted essential services.
He added that the survey focused on four key indicators: impact on businesses, food availability, health effects and access to basic services.
According to him, the report showed that the consequences of the floods on agriculture and properties were very significant.
