Afenifere, YCE warn INEC against postponing elections

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, and the Senior Elders Forum of the Yoruba Council of Elders have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission not to postpone the general elections slated for February and March.

They urged the commission to put all measures in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.

Afenifere, in a statement on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, urged INEC to ensure that the elections hold as scheduled and winners emerge and are inaugurated on May 29, 2023, as stipulated by the law.

“We feel that there is the need to let anyone thinking of postponement or cancellation of the elections that such a thing is and will remain unacceptable, no matter the reason.

“We recall that in 2015, there was insecurity too to the extent that some local government areas, specifically in Borno State, were in the hands of Boko Haram terrorists. Yet elections were held. There also was insecurity in 2019 and elections were not stopped,” Afenifere said.

The group said Nigerians were prepared for the elections just as the whole world is awaiting the exercise.

The Senior Elders Forum of the Yoruba Council of Elders, in a statement by its former National President, Samuel Adeleye, on Tuesday in Ibadan, also warned the Federal Government never to postpone the elections, adding that such a move could lead to anarchy.

The statement read in part, “Insecurity could likely go unabated. Postponing the election could lead us into chaos and anarchy. If they cancel the election, will President Buhari be there till May 29 next year? Will he still be in Aso Rock?”

The group also claimed that over 90 per cent of people in the South Western region are fed up with the “concoction called Nigeria.”
