The Civil Society in Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN) said Malaria is a serious disease that can be life-threatening, which can be prevented and treated but if not diagnosed and treated promptly can progress to a severe form that is often fatal
This was made known on Tuesday, in Ilorin at ACOMIN’s first advocacy media briefing of the year
ACOMIN affirmed that in Nigeria, there is a connection between weather patterns and the occurrence of malaria, as the country experiences high levels of rainfall.
ACOMIN Kwara State coordinator, Femi Olatunbosun, said the media briefing is a usual event to observe the loopholes to improve malaria service and ensure the well-being of the people at all time
He appreciated WHO for its partnership and urged for more to achieve success stories in the health sector.
He also called on the mass media to contribute to Nigeria’s goal of eliminating malaria by informing and sensitizing the populace.
The State program officer of ACOMIN, Folake Iseyem pointed out that malaria incidences thrive in areas with stagnant water, poor drainage systems, and inadequate waste management.
She maintained that urgent action and collective effort from the state government and the public are needed to prevent an increase in the rate of malaria.
She urged citizens to prioritise their health by taking action to improve their environments and eliminate the breeding grounds responsible for malaria-carrying mosquitoes, highlighting that in cases of malaria infection, prompt diagnosis and treatment are also crucial in managing malaria.
State coordinator field office WHO, Dr Saliu Abdullahi, assures of WHO’s dedication to partnering with ACOMIN and other NGOs when it comes to the health and well-being of citizens
He applauded the Kwara State government and ACOMIN for their efforts in ensuring the well-being of the people in the State
Emphasizing the importance of Community engagement, Dr Saliu said it is important to involve the community through community awareness, sensitization, and engagement through community stakeholders, to achieve the result.
In their various goodwill messages, Reprthe presentative of the State Malaria Elimination Program (SMEP), Hajia Baker, and pioneer president of Magaji Ngeri joint youth, Onimago Muhammad Qodri, commended the malaria intervention program of ACOMIN.
According to them, combating malaria in the state cannot be overemphasised.
