15 die, 36 injured in Bauchi, Ogun crashes

No fewer than 15 people lost their lives in separate accidents in Bauchi and Ogun states on Saturday and Sunday.

Seven people were killed in a crash that occurred on New Year’s Eve along the Bauchi-Maiduguri highway in the Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Also, 14 others sustained varying degrees of injury in the crash that occurred on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

The Bauchi State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Yusuf Abdullahi, said the crash happened around 7.35 pm.

“The crash involved two commercial vehicles, a Volkswagen Sharon minibus with number plate, DRZ 47 ZY, and a fiat pick-up van.

“The probable causes of the road traffic crash were speed limit violation and the use of worn-out tyres,” he added.

Abdullahi warned drivers against recklessness on highways.

Eight people also lost their lives and 22 were injured on Sunday in two separate accidents in Ogun State.

It was gathered that the first accident occurred along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway and claimed one life while six others were injured.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident involved a Toyota Siena and a Toyota RAV 4.

He noted that the vehicles had a head-on collision.

The Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Ogun State, Florence Okpe, said the second accident occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

According to her, a total of 25 persons, comprising 17 male adults and eight female adults were involved in the accident.

Okpe said the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Mack tanker.

“A total of 16 persons sustained various degrees of injury, while seven persons were recorded dead from the crash (six male adults and one female adult) and two others unhurt.

“The suspected cause of the crash was speeding on the part of the Toyota bus driver who lose control and rammed into the moving truck from behind as a result of speed,” Okpe said.
